Description
The AoeSpy HDMI RF Modulator converts HDMI and RCA composite or component video signals to an RF coaxial output, allowing modern streaming devices, cable boxes, gaming consoles, and media players to send their signal to older televisions that only have a coax (antenna) input. If the TV on location only accepts a coaxial cable — and there is no HDMI port on the set — this AV adapter rental is how you get your source on-screen.
The unit passes the incoming signal out through a selectable channel (CATV, TV, or AU mode) so your TV receives it like a broadcast channel. It also includes antenna pass-through, so you can keep an OTA antenna connected while the modulator is in-line without losing access to broadcast channels. Compatible sources include Roku, Fire Stick, Apple TV, game consoles, Blu-ray players, cable boxes, security DVRs, and any device with an HDMI or RCA output.

HDMI RF Modulator Rental Tips
Once connected, scan or manually tune your TV to the channel the modulator is outputting on. In CATV mode this is typically channel 3 or 4; in TV mode the channel number depends on the switch setting. On most older TVs, press the channel scan/auto-program button and the modulator’s signal will appear as a cable channel.
If the TV has an OTA antenna connected, plug the antenna into the modulator’s antenna-in port, then connect the modulator’s RF output to the TV. This way the TV receives both OTA channels and your HDMI/RCA source — you switch between them by changing TV channels, not by unplugging cables.
RF modulation converts your source signal to an analog TV signal, which is standard definition by nature. Even a 4K HDMI input will display at SD quality on the coax-connected TV. This is inherent to how RF coax distribution works — it’s a compatibility solution, not a quality upgrade.
The unit has the F-connector coax output port, but you will need to supply a coax cable to run from the modulator to the TV. Standard RG6 or RG59 coax with F-connectors (the same as your cable TV connection) works fine. A short 3–6 foot coax cable is enough for most setups.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Will this work with any TV that has a coax input?
Yes — any TV with a standard coaxial RF input (the round threaded port used for cable TV or antennas) can receive the signal from this modulator. This includes CRT televisions, older flat-screens, and any set without HDMI that has an antenna/cable port.
What video quality should I expect on the TV?
Output is standard definition analog video — comparable to cable TV quality before the digital transition. The image will be watchable and clear, but not high-definition. This is the inherent limitation of analog RF distribution.
Does it work with HDCP-protected content (Netflix, streaming)?
HDCP (copy protection on most streaming services) may cause issues with some modulator configurations. If Netflix or other streaming apps go black, the HDCP handshake is being blocked by the analog conversion. Non-HDCP content and local files generally work without issue. Use an HDCP-compatible HDMI splitter upstream if needed for protected content.
Can I split the signal to multiple TVs?
The modulator has one RF output. You can use a standard coaxial splitter downstream to send the signal to multiple TVs on the same coax run, the same way cable TV signals are split to multiple rooms. Signal strength may decrease with each additional split.
