Description
The Focusrite Scarlett Solo (4th Gen) is a USB-C audio interface rental built for musicians, vocalists, podcasters, and content creators who need studio-quality recording without building a permanent studio. A single XLR/TRS combo input handles condenser and dynamic microphones (with 48V phantom power for condensers), and a front-panel instrument input handles guitars and basses direct — so whether you’re tracking vocals, recording acoustic instruments, or laying down DI guitar, the Scarlett Solo has you covered in one box.
The 4th generation adds Focusrite’s Air mode, which applies a high-frequency presence boost that models the transformer-based character of Focusrite’s ISA studio preamps — giving vocals and acoustic instruments extra openness and clarity on the way in. Direct monitoring lets you hear yourself in the headphone output with near-zero latency while the DAW processes the signal. It records at up to 24-bit / 192 kHz and works on both Mac and Windows via class-compliant USB, so no drivers are needed on modern macOS.

Scarlett Solo Rental Tips
Condenser microphones require 48V phantom power to operate. Press the 48V button on the Scarlett Solo before connecting your mic and ensure it is engaged before you start your session. Dynamic microphones (like an SM7B or SM58) do not need phantom power — you can leave 48V off when using a dynamic, but it will not damage them if left on.
The Air mode button applies a presence boost that adds clarity and openness to vocals and acoustic instruments. It is not a dramatic effect, but many engineers prefer the sound. Record a short test take with Air on and off and compare — for dull-sounding rooms or close-miked vocals it often makes a noticeable difference.
After plugging in the Scarlett Solo, go to your DAW’s audio settings (Preferences > Audio or similar) and select “Scarlett Solo USB” as both the input and output device. On macOS, the interface appears in System Preferences > Sound as well. If you don’t do this, your DAW will use the built-in mic/speakers instead of the interface.
Set your input level with the Gain knob on the interface — aim for the halo ring to glow green and occasionally touch amber, never red. Clipping at the interface level is permanent and cannot be fixed in post. Digital gain adjustment in your DAW is for mixing; the Gain knob is for capturing the signal cleanly at the source.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need to install drivers?
On macOS (Big Sur and later), the Scarlett Solo is class-compliant — plug in via USB-C and it works immediately, no drivers needed. On Windows, Focusrite’s driver (Focusrite Control) is recommended for the best performance and low-latency monitoring. Download it free from focusrite.com before your session.
What DAWs work with the Scarlett Solo?
Any DAW that supports ASIO (Windows) or Core Audio (Mac): GarageBand, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Reaper, Studio One, Cubase, and others. The interface is hardware — it works with any software that accepts audio input from a USB interface.
Can I record two sources at once?
The Scarlett Solo has two inputs: one XLR/TRS combo (mic or line) and one 1/4″ Hi-Z (instrument). You can record both simultaneously — for example, a vocal mic and a DI guitar at the same time — as two separate tracks in your DAW. You cannot record two microphones at once; for that you would need the Scarlett 2i2 or a larger interface.
Is the bundled software included with the rental?
The hardware comes with Focusrite’s software bundle codes (Pro Tools Artist, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE), but these are single-use licence activations already redeemed by the owner. The rental is for the audio interface hardware only. You can use any DAW or secording app you already own.
What microphone should I pair with this?
Any XLR microphone works — condenser (with 48V phantom power on) or dynamic (no phantom power needed). For vocal recording in a home or untreated space, a dynamic mic like the Shure SM7B or Rode PodMic tends to reject room noise better. For cleaner spaces or acoustic instruments, a large-diaphragm condenser is a natural pairing. Ask about microphone rentals if you need one alongside the interface.
