Use the +20 dB boost on DSLRs
Most DSLR and mirrorless preamps are noisy at high gain. Flip the VideoMic Pro to +20 dB and drop your camera input down to the lowest clean setting — you’ll hear a dramatic noise floor drop in your recordings.
Engage the 80 Hz high-pass for outdoor work
Wind, HVAC rumble, and traffic noise all sit below 80 Hz. The built-in filter cleans this up at the source and saves you headaches in post.
Carry a spare 9V
Your Gear Locker rental ships with a fresh battery installed, but on multi-day shoots a backup 9V in your kit bag is cheap insurance. The mic gives ~70 hours on alkaline, but cold weather drains them faster.
Don’t forget to turn it off
The VideoMic Pro has no auto-power-off (that’s the Pro+ feature). Always switch it off between takes and at wrap, or you’ll find a dead battery on day two.

Does the Rode VideoMic Pro rental include a battery?
Yes. Every Gear Locker Rode VideoMic Pro rental ships with a fresh 9V battery installed and tested. You’re ready to record as soon as you plug in.
Is this the original VideoMic Pro or the Pro+?
This is the original VideoMic Pro (VMP-R) with the Rycote Lyre shockmount. It runs on a single 9V battery rather than the rechargeable LB-1 lithium cell used by the Pro+. The original VMP is lighter, simpler, and the go-to choice for most on-camera shooters.
What cameras does it work with?
Any camera with a standard hot shoe and a 3.5mm microphone input. That covers virtually all DSLRs, mirrorless bodies, prosumer camcorders, and handheld audio recorders. It does NOT work with cameras that only have XLR inputs (Sony FX6, FS7, etc.) without an adapter.
Can I mount it on a boom pole?
Yes. The base of the shoe mount has a 3/8″ thread for boom poles. Ask us about renting a boom pole alongside the mic if you need overhead coverage.
How is this different from a lavalier mic?
A shotgun mic like the VideoMic Pro captures directional audio from in front of the camera and is ideal for run-and-gun, B-roll, and situations where you can’t hide a lav. A lavalier clips to the talent’s clothing and gives consistent close-up dialogue. For interviews, many shooters use both — shotgun for ambient, lav for primary.
