Description

Looking for a Nikon lens rental that covers everything from wide-angle to short telephoto with a constant f/2.8 aperture? The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM is a fast, versatile standard zoom built specifically for APS-C / DX format Nikon DSLRs. The f/2.8 maximum aperture holds across the entire zoom range — from 17mm wide-angle through to 50mm — making it a one-lens solution for events, weddings, documentary, portraits, and low-light work.

Sigma’s OS (Optical Stabilizer) delivers approximately 4 stops of shake compensation for steadier handheld shots at slower shutter speeds. HSM (HyperSonic Motor) provides fast, quiet autofocus with full-time manual override. Two FLD glass elements and three aspherical elements keep sharpness and contrast high across the frame, even wide open.

Nikon Lens Rental Tips

01
Lock the zoom when carrying

This lens has a zoom lock switch that holds it at 17mm when walking or carrying. It’s the most compact position and prevents the barrel from creeping out. Get into the habit of locking it whenever the camera is at your side — the barrel can extend surprisingly far if left unlocked.

02
Turn OS off on a tripod

When shooting on a tripod or other stable support, switch OS off. Optical stabilization on a stationary camera can cause the system to hunt and introduce blur in long exposures. OS is most effective at shutter speeds between 1/15s and 1/focal length.

03
Note the reverse zoom direction

Sigma’s zoom ring rotates in the opposite direction to Nikon’s own lenses — turning clockwise zooms out to 17mm, counter-clockwise zooms in to 50mm. This catches many Nikon shooters off guard at first. It takes a few minutes to get used to but becomes second nature quickly.

04
Sharp wide open — use it

Unlike budget f/2.8 zooms, this Nikon lens rental is genuinely usable at maximum aperture. Centre sharpness at f/2.8 is excellent; edges improve noticeably by f/4. For events and available-light work there is no need to stop down — shoot wide open and let the f/2.8 do its job.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Which Nikon cameras does this work with?

This is a Nikon F mount DX lens designed for APS-C sensor Nikon DSLRs — D3000, D3500, D5000, D5600, D7000, D7500, D7200 series and similar crop-sensor bodies. It will physically mount on full-frame Nikon DSLRs but will produce heavy vignetting and is not intended for full-frame use.

How does f/2.8 help in low light?

A constant f/2.8 aperture lets in twice as much light as f/4, and four times as much as f/5.6 — the typical maximum aperture of kit zooms at the long end. For indoor events, receptions, and concerts without flash, this difference is significant and means cleaner images at lower ISO settings.

Does it work with Nikon Z mirrorless cameras?

Not directly — this lens uses the Nikon F mount, while Nikon’s mirrorless cameras use the Z mount. With a Nikon FTZ or FTZ II adapter, F-mount lenses can be used on Nikon Z cameras. Autofocus and optical stabilization generally work, though performance may vary by body.

What filter size does it use?

The filter thread is 77mm — a professional standard size shared with many Nikon telephoto lenses. Check our 77mm CPL and ND filter options to pair with this lens if needed.
