BNC Crimper Rental Tips

01
Match the die to your cable

The PA1389 ships with dies pre-installed for Belden SDI cables. The most common sizes you’ll use: 0.178″ for Belden 1855A micro SDI, 0.255″ for Belden 1505A, and 0.278″ for Belden 1694A. Always confirm which die size matches your specific cable and connector before crimping — the connector manufacturer’s spec sheet is the authoritative source.

02
Use the safety release if a crimp goes wrong

The fully ratcheting mechanism advances through the crimp cycle and won’t release until complete. If you’ve started a crimp on a misaligned or wrong connector, press the safety release lever to disengage the ratchet and open the jaws mid-cycle. This saves the connector and prevents a stuck tool.

03
Strip to the connector’s spec, not guesswork

A proper BNC crimp starts with a properly stripped cable. Each BNC connector manufacturer specifies exact strip lengths for the outer jacket, foil/braid, and centre conductor. Incorrect strip lengths are the #1 cause of failed 75 Ohm terminations. Use a dedicated coax stripper set to the connector spec, not a knife.

04
Test every terminated cable

After crimping, verify continuity and check for shorts between the centre conductor and shield using a cable tester or multimeter before routing cables into a wall, conduit, or overhead run. Testing on the bench takes seconds; troubleshooting an installed bad connector takes hours.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does this work with Canare or Gepco SDI cable?

The PA1389 is specifically designed and die-matched for Belden SDI cables. While the physical crimp sizes may overlap with some Canare or Gepco cables, proper termination requires using the correct die size for your specific cable’s outer diameter. Check your cable’s spec sheet against the PA1389’s crimp sizes. For Canare cable, a Canare-specific crimper is recommended for guaranteed results.

Do I need to bring my own BNC connectors and cable?

Yes — this rental is the crimper tool only. BNC connectors, Belden cable, and a coax cable stripper are not included and must be supplied separately. We recommend sourcing your connectors and cable from a broadcast supply house to ensure correct die-size matching.

What’s the difference between 3G-SDI and HD-SDI for crimping?

From a crimping standpoint, the difference is in the cable and connector spec, not the crimper itself. 3G-SDI (up to 2.97 Gbps) requires higher-quality cable such as Belden 1505A or 1694A and properly rated true 75 Ohm BNC connectors. The PA1389 handles both HD-SDI and 3G-SDI terminations correctly when paired with the appropriate Belden cable and connectors.
