Description
The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is the modern benchmark for everyday fast prime photography on Nikon F-mount — compact, lightweight, and optically excellent at every aperture. The built-in Silent Wave Motor means it autofocuses quickly and quietly on every Nikon body, including entry-level cameras that the older D-type cannot drive.
Whether you’re shooting portraits with creamy bokeh, low-light events, street photography, or video, the 50mm f/1.8G punches well above its size and price class. Sharp wide open, virtually silent AF, and a natural 50mm perspective that works for almost any subject — this is one of the most versatile lenses you can rent.

Prime Lens Rental Tips
Unlike the older D-type, the G-type has a built-in Silent Wave Motor so it autofocuses on all Nikon F-mount bodies — including entry-level cameras like the D3500, D5600, and D3000 series that lack a body AF motor. If you’re not sure which 50mm works with your camera, this is the safe choice.
Wide open at f/1.8 the lens is sharp with slight edge softness — perfectly fine for portraits where your subject is centred. Stop to f/2 and it’s noticeably cleaner. By f/2.8 this lens is razor sharp across the frame. For critical work, f/2–f/2.8 is the sweet spot.
On a crop sensor body (D7500, D500, D5600 etc.) the 50mm gives a 75mm equivalent — a flattering portrait focal length with natural compression. If you’re shooting headshots or upper-body portraits on a DX body, this is an excellent choice without the cost of a dedicated 85mm.
The SWM autofocus is nearly inaudible — a genuine advantage for video work where camera-mounted mic pickup is a concern. Combined with M/A mode for instant manual override, this is one of the cleanest 50mm options for DSLR video shooters on Nikon.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What’s the difference between this and the 50mm f/1.8D?
The main differences are autofocus and aperture control. The G-type has a built-in Silent Wave Motor so it autofocuses on all Nikon bodies including entry-level models. The D-type requires the camera body’s own AF motor (not present on D40, D60, D3000, D5000 series). The G-type also has no aperture ring — aperture is controlled from the camera body only.
Will this work on my camera?
Yes — the AF-S G-type autofocuses on every Nikon F-mount body ever made, from the D3000 up to the D850 and Df. It also works on older film SLRs that support G-type lenses. If you have any Nikon DSLR, this lens will autofocus correctly.
Is it good for portraits?
Absolutely — this is one of the most popular portrait lenses on Nikon. On full-frame the natural 50mm perspective is flattering for environmental and three-quarter portraits. On DX the 75mm equivalent is ideal for tighter headshots. At f/1.8–f/2 you get smooth background separation that makes subjects pop.
Can I use it for video?
Yes — the Silent Wave Motor makes this one of the better DSLR lenses for video. AF is quiet enough that on-camera mics won’t pick it up. The M/A switch lets you instantly take manual focus control mid-shot. No aperture ring means you’ll need to adjust exposure via the camera body during a take.
