The RED Komodo 6K is RED Digital Cinema’s most accessible cinema camera rental — delivering the legendary RED image quality, colour science, and global shutter sensor technology in an ultra-compact 4×4×4″ body weighing just 2.1 lb. The 19.9MP Super 35mm global shutter CMOS sensor captures 6K REDCODE RAW with 16+ stops of dynamic range and eliminates rolling shutter artifacts entirely — even on fast-moving subjects.
The Canon RF mount accepts a wide range of adapters — Canon EF, PL, Leica M, and more — making it compatible with virtually any lens system. Netflix-approved. Rental is body only — CFast 2.0 media, batteries, cage, lenses, and monitors available as separate rentals.

Cinema Camera Rental Tips
At 6K REDCODE RAW HQ, the Komodo consumes approximately 1TB per hour. Budget your media accordingly — a 256GB CFast 2.0 card gives roughly 15 minutes at maximum quality. For longer shoots, use REDCODE MQ or LQ to reduce data rate, or record Apple ProRes for a more manageable file size with excellent quality.
The free RED Control app for iOS and Android gives you a live preview and full camera control wirelessly via Wi-Fi — effectively turning your phone into a monitor and remote control. This is one of the Komodo’s most powerful features for solo operators and small crews. Download it before your rental day.
RED IPP2 (Image Processing Pipeline 2) is the current colour science standard and the recommended setting for all new Komodo shoots. It provides a cleaner, more balanced starting point for grading in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, or FCPX compared to the legacy REDlogFilm pipeline. Set it in camera before you start.
Unlike most cameras with rolling shutter, the Komodo’s global shutter exposes all pixels simultaneously — eliminating skew, wobble, and partial-exposure flash banding. This means you can move the camera aggressively, shoot with flash, and pan quickly without artifacts. It opens up shooting techniques that simply aren’t possible with rolling shutter cameras.

What lenses can I use with it?
The Komodo has a Canon RF mount. The included Canon EF-EOS R adapter gives you full electronic communication with Canon EF and EF-S lenses. With third-party adapters (not included) you can use PL cinema lenses, Leica M lenses, and many others. Native Canon RF lenses are also supported with basic functionality. Check RED’s lens compatibility list at red.com for your specific lenses.
What CFast 2.0 cards work with it?
The Komodo requires fast CFast 2.0 cards with a sustained write speed of at least 280 MB/s for 6K recording. Recommended cards include RED PRO CFast, Angelbird AV Pro CF, and ARRI-edition Angelbird cards. Standard CFast 2.0 cards from Lexar and SanDisk may work at lower bitrates but are not officially certified. CFast media must be rented or brought separately.
Is it approved for Netflix and streaming delivery?
Yes — as of 2026 the RED Komodo 6K is on Netflix’s list of approved cameras for original content production. It meets the minimum 4K capture requirements and the REDCODE RAW workflow is fully accepted. What NLE software supports REDCODE RAW?
DaVinci Resolve (free version included) has the best native REDCODE RAW support and is the recommended editing and grading software. Adobe Premiere Pro supports R3D files natively via the RED plugin. Final Cut Pro X requires transcoding or the REDCINE-X PRO app for proxy workflows. Avid Media Composer can work with ProRes proxies generated from the R3D files.
