Price range: $50 through $550

On-camera monitor recorder rental — Atomos Ninja V with 5″ 1000-nit HDR touchscreen. Records 4K ProRes, ProRes RAW, and DNxHR directly from HDMI. Focus peaking, false colour, waveform, and Log-to-HDR preview. 360g, 25mm thin. SSD drive and NP-F battery not included.

Description

The Atomos Ninja V is the industry-standard monitor recorder rental for on-camera production — combining a daylight-viewable 1000-nit HDR touchscreen with direct 4K ProRes recording to SSD. Record edit-ready ProRes or DNxHR files straight from your camera’s sensor via HDMI, bypassing internal compression and record time limits.

The 5″ screen shows 10-bit HDR in real time with focus peaking, false colour, waveform, vectorscope, and Log-to-HDR preview — more monitoring tools than most cameras can display natively. At just 360g and 25mm thin, it mounts cleanly to any camera rig. Compatible with virtually every DSLR and mirrorless camera with an HDMI output.

Monitor Recorder Rental Tips

01
Bring a compatible SSD

The Ninja V records to an AtomX SSDmini or standard 2.5″ SATA SSD — neither is included in the rental. Use an AtomX SSDmini for the most compact setup, or any fast 2.5″ SSD (Samsung T7, WD My Passport SSD) in the included Master Caddy II. Minimum 500MB/s write speed required for 4K ProRes.

02
Set your camera to output the cleanest signal

For best results, set your camera’s HDMI output to the highest quality available — typically 4:2:2 10-bit if your camera supports it. Many cameras that only record 8-bit internally can output 10-bit via HDMI to the Ninja V, giving you significantly better colour grading latitude in post.

03
Use false colour for exposure

The Ninja V offers both Atomos and ARRI false colour modes — colour-coded overlays that show exactly where your exposure sits relative to skin tone, highlight clipping, and shadow crushing. Far more reliable than zebras for professional exposure work. Set your preferred mode in AtomOS and it persists between sessions.

04
Load a LUT to preview your grade

If you’re shooting Log footage, load a monitoring LUT to the Ninja V so you can preview your footage with a grade applied on set. The AtomHDR engine handles this in real time — you record the clean Log signal but see a graded preview on screen. Load your LUT via USB before your shoot.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does it work with my camera?

The Ninja V is compatible with virtually any camera that outputs video via HDMI — including Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Blackmagic, and many others. For ProRes RAW recording, your camera must support RAW output over HDMI (currently supported by Sony, Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm, and Olympus select models). Check Atomos’s camera compatibility list at atomos.com for your specific model.

Do I need to record to it, or can I just use it as a monitor?

Both — the Ninja V works perfectly as a monitor-only without any SSD inserted. All the monitoring tools (false colour, focus peaking, waveform, LUTs, safe areas) are fully available in monitor-only mode. Recording is entirely optional and requires a compatible SSD drive purchased or rented separately.

What SSD should I use?

The fastest and most compact option is the Atomos AtomX SSDmini (available in 500GB and 1TB). A 1TB drive gives approximately 2.5 hours of 4K ProRes recording. Any fast 2.5″ SATA SSD in the included Master Caddy II also works — Samsung 870 EVO, WD Blue, or similar. Avoid slow spinning HDDs and cheap SSDs; they may not sustain the write speed needed for 4K ProRes.

How do I power it?

The Ninja V accepts NP-F L-series batteries (Sony NP-F550, NP-F750, NP-F970) on the rear battery plate, or 30W USB-C PD power from a compatible charger or power bank. The AC power supply is included in the rental for studio or mains-powered use. For on-camera battery power, you’ll need to supply your own NP-F battery.
