Description
The K&F Concept M42 to Sony E-Mount Lens Adapter lets you mount vintage M42-threaded lenses onto any Sony E-mount camera body — including the full-frame Sony a7 series (a7 IV, a7R V, a7S III), APS-C a6000 series (a6400, a6600), cinema bodies (FX3, FX6), and the ZV-E1. M42 (also called the Pentax screw mount or Universal screw mount) was one of the most widely adopted lens mount standards of the 1950s through 1980s, producing thousands of high-quality lenses from Zeiss, Pentax (Super-Takumar), Helios, Meyer-Optik Görlitz, and many others that are now available for very little cost and produce distinctive, characterful images.
The adapter is manual-focus and manual-aperture only — there are no electronic contacts. This is the correct approach for vintage glass: it gives you complete manual control and forces the full creative engagement that makes these lenses rewarding to shoot. Use your camera’s focus peaking, magnified live view, and in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) to hit focus precisely. An ideal lens adapter rental for portrait, street, and cinematic video work.

M42 Adapter Rental Tips
Since the adapter has no electronic contacts, your camera will not know when the lens is in focus. Enable Focus Peaking (Menu › Camera Settings › Focus Assist › Peaking) to get an on-screen colour highlight on in-focus edges. Use this with Magnified View (half-press focus button or dedicated key) to nail critical focus on the manual lens.
With a manual lens and no electronic contacts, your camera will meter in stopped-down mode — metering what light passes through at the set aperture. Use Aperture Priority (A mode) for static shots where light changes, or Manual mode for full control. You set the aperture on the lens itself (the aperture ring); the camera only controls shutter and ISO.
On a full-frame Sony (a7 series, FX3, FX6, ZV-E1), M42 lenses mount at their native focal length. On APS-C Sony bodies (a6000 series, ZV-E10), the 1.5× crop factor narrows the field of view: a 50mm M42 lens on APS-C frames like a 75mm equivalent. Factor this in when choosing your M42 glass for the look you want.
This rental covers the adapter only. M42 lenses are not included. Bring your own M42 glass (Helios 44-2, Takumar 50mm, Zeiss Jena, or any M42 screw mount lens) and the adapter connects it to your Sony E-mount body. M42 lenses are inexpensive and widely available used online.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Will autofocus work with this adapter?
No. This is a passive adapter with no electronic contacts. Autofocus is not possible — manual focus only. Sony E-mount’s autofocus system requires electronic communication between the lens and camera; M42 lenses predate this technology entirely. Use focus peaking, magnified view, and practice to achieve accurate manual focus.
Will my in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) work?
IBIS will work, but since there is no electronic communication from the lens, the camera cannot automatically read the focal length. Go to Menu › Camera Settings › Image Stabilization › Focal Length — and manually enter the focal length of your M42 lens. This allows IBIS to apply the correct compensation. This is a standard workflow for shooting vintage glass on Sony bodies.
Can I use this to take still photos and video?
Yes — both. M42 lenses on Sony E-mount can be used for still photography and video production. Many cinematographers use vintage M42 glass specifically for its characteristic rendering: swirly bokeh (Helios 44-2), clinical sharpness (Zeiss Jena Pancolar), or rich midtone rendering (Carl Zeiss Tessar). The manual focus discipline is the only constraint.
What M42 lenses are most popular for cinematography?
The most popular M42 lenses for video and cinematography include the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 (swirly bokeh, widely available), Pentax Super-Takumar 50mm f/1.4 (warm rendering, radioactive thorium glass coating on early versions), and Carl Zeiss Jena lenses (Pancolar, Flektogon, Sonnar). For portrait photography, the Helios and Takumar 85mm options are sought after. All of these mount directly via this adapter.
